Back to start Norwegian version of the blog

I have raced the blodslitet today. It's a long distance orienteering race. I was racing the M-Open klass at 8.9 km A-Level. I have never competed in the A-level before and in addition it was a commonstart, and that's new for me. It was 175 runners so the first controls was a really queue race. You can't miss then. From control 2 it was a butterly, to get some separation of runners. It was quite fun and easy.

Butterfly controls:

So, it went OK. I ended up on 64th place of 175, not bad as a start, but still I need some more speed .... And I beated the other more experienced runners (place 101,105,120,129 and 168) with good margin, so I'm satisfied. Kim from my own club ended at place 22,and the old eliterunner is just all to good even if he struggles with a bad knee.

  1. Congratulations! I'm not really in a position to comment given my lack of success at Norwegian orienteering but it looks like a reasonable route so, as you say, it must be the speed that's lacking. Is that running speed or navigation speed or both?

    1. It's obviously running speed, as I had really no miss to any control. After studying the race, I could probably take the road to control 2, maybe more road-running to control 10, and the shortest route in line to control 13. The speed is 9 min/km (8.9km) (the actually distance was 10.2 km due to the GPS), so my goals to next year is to get some better running speed and get rid of 5 kg weigth...

The navigation speed was OK, but I was helped by beeing in a 'train' of people, but I was heavily using compass course to select the best 'train' to follow. I saw some other guys selecting the wrong train or choosing to cut a little, and they where left behind... So my really orienteering skills will be judged on the next individual race. It migth not be so good next time...
